Blog #4 MOMI

My group in the MOMI museum visited the camera, editing, props, and script sections. We started off with the film cameras from different eras beginning with the early 1900’s. The first was a camera in a wooden box. I have never seen this camera before and I learned that it was made of a certain material of film that heated up very fast so films would usually be very short. After that we moved on to the camera with the crank and how that began to take normal film. As the years passed each camera progressed in size and efficiency and eventually color, which we saw a red strip of film. The tour guide showed us examples of how colored films looks around that time and it only picked up certain strong colors as opposed to other colors that looked more dull. We briefly passed by editing and saw various editing stations and learned that a lot of jobs in film were sort of sexist. Editing was mostly done by women. I also learned that in sports there is live editing being done with multiple cameras at every angle. Next was the script section where we saw the scripts of famous movies and shows. Here also learned that woman did a lot of script supervising. The script edits looked very complicated it was almost another language. We passed by props as well from “Exorcist” to “The Mask”. We were told that everything in the museum has been used in the actual movies and that was pretty amazing to me.

Blog #3 Relationship Between Shots

I have decided to write about the final Jason Bourne movie and want to focus on the assassination attempt scene. The scene starts off quick paced as Jason Bourne charges at a door. They used a tracking shot to follow him into the main room. Matched action was used in my opinion as he walks through the door. Following that the camera focuses on his point of view, which is the main speaker. There is a shot of a shooter in a dark room with a POV of the speaker then a reaction shot of Bourne as he notices a glare coming from the vent. Once the shot is taken the camera focuses on the briefly on the main speaker who was shot and a reaction of the crowd and security guards taking action. Afterwards there is a jumpcut to a dark room where the shooter begins to run. The scene cuts back and forth from the madness of people exiting the room in masses and medium shots of Jason finding and exit. I think that the cuts were made according to continuity because the flow is very fast paced, but smooth keeping the audience in the movie world and switching from point of views so that we may understand what’s occurring as it’s occurring. The shots are establishing a scene to where the main character is hunting the protagonist so they clear out the space to make that scene more climactic. Fast paced editing fits best with action and horror. Link to movie scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvtb9A9ai9Q

Sound Walk

As I step outside of my building I begin to hear the wind howling. My building has a garden in the middle so for the meantime it is quiet. I walk the tunnel to the street and almost instantly I begin to hear kids laughing about things that happened in school as well as play fighting. I hear the scuffles of their sneakers a scratching the cement and the items inside their backpacks bouncing. Mixed in with those sounds I also hear cars honking and rubber on pavement. I hear cars speeding and more horns in the distance from the Bruckner expressway. Drilling and hammering from a nearby construction sight. A tractor moving metal from one place to another and the slush from wet mud being spread. I walk further down the block and listen to the bell of a corner store opening and the last half of a mans sentence as he walks out with bags rustling and sounds of his teeth crushing chips. From the ground I hear and feel the vibration of the passing train. Different conversations go in my ear and out. I step down to the subway station and the booth employee is on the microphone assisting a customer, I swipe my metrocard and peacefully wait for the train. The train is approaching and I hear the roar from a distance as it slows down and makes a screeching sound. The doors slam open and I am in another environment. 10 different conversations going on, but I hear them all muffled as I am accustomed to the noise by now. Leaving the Bronx and entering Manhattan the conversation subjects change to business talk. I hear way more car horns and sounds from all over to crumbs being stepped on to car doors slamming, phones ringing, and tree branches breaking. I grow tired of the noise and walk to a secluded area in central park where it seems as if you’re not even in the city anymore. Wind crashing with the trees, a waterfall, leaves cracking from squirrels running through. No artificial sounds nor human made.

Artist Statement

My name is Carlos Acevedo, I started college majoring in sociology, because based on the description it looked interesting. After having 101 it was a drag and I was basically forced to major in medicine because my family believes either that or law are stable careers and make "good money".

After constantly struggling in those tough science classes I decided to stop it and major in film. This came out of nowhere completely. I had never thought about it in my life except for being a photographer for eight years. I absolutely loved my prerequisites and I passed with flying colors, which never happens. So I knew I found what I loved and I felt like I had a knack for it no matter what area in film I did. My goal in film is to be an indie filmmaker outside of Hollywood which to me is more of a business than art. I just want to tell good stories and travel the world. I believe that in this country you can have multiple dreams. Another dream of mine is to serve in the military.

I am still pondering that decision because of my schedule and it will change my life and would break me out of my comfort zone, but that is what life is about and how you grow. What I love about film and my goal for it is to convey emotion in story telling, the power to make people emotional. I believe that is a big part in success I the business world right next to well crafted stories. I happen to do my own films outside of school and I love to write, I think my scripts are well put together and enjoy getting my work out there, but all in all I think I can do my best work when I am the camera man. I feel that I am able to capture angles and stability of shots that makes the film smooth.
